CANNABIS! A VIPER VAUDEVILLE - Music, Dance, and Spoken Word

“I want you to close your eyes and remember your first puff puff pass,” Baba Israel raps near the beginning of “Cannabis: A Viper Vaudeville,” which is a fast-paced flashy rap concert and dance party clearly geared to fans of the psychoactive plant that has dozens of names and many millions of fans.

CANNABIS! A VIPER VAUDEVILLE

Cannabis! A Viper Vaudeville is a theatrical concert exploring the history of cannabis using music, dance, and spoken word. The team includes Baba Israel as writer, performer, and co-director; Grace Galu as composer/performer; and dramaturg/co-director Talvin Wilks in collaboration with Soul Inscribed and an ensemble of dancers.

With music, dance, and spoken word, it explores the history of cannabis using Hip Hop’s remix and mashup tradition. Inspired by Martin A. Lee’s book Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana, CANNABIS! A VIPER VAUDEVILLE weaves the music of icons such as Bob Marley with the stories of grassroots activists Dennis Peron and Brownie Mary with personal narratives. From Congo Square to the speakeasies of the jazz age, from the revolutionary happenings of the ’60s to the AIDS activism of the San Francisco buyers club, our time traveling tale invokes a tradition of rebel spaces — sites of music, healing, and resistance.

“I saw what was billed as a “sneak preview” of “Cannabis: A Viper Vaudeville” at Little Island last August, less than half of the full two-hour show, and I was struck in particular by Israel’s band Soul Inscribed‘s thrilling mix of musical genres, from to jazz to hip hop to blues to pop (even a rendition of The Beatles “I get high with a little help from my friends.”), and, a highlight, singer-songwriter Grace Galu imitating Louis Armstrong’s singing style. Cannabis: A Viper Vaudeville. An Entertainment, A Celebration, A History, A Clearinghouse.” – AUTHOR:NEW YORK THEATER PUBLISHED DATE:JULY 28, 2022

Inspired by Martin A. Lee’s book Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana – Medical, Recreational, and Scientific, this theatrical concert weaves the histories of icons such as Louis Armstrong and Bob Marley and grassroots activists such as Dennis Perron and Brownie Mary with personal narrative. Join us for a time-traveling tale of jubilation, injustice, and transformation.

Featuring the talent of Baba Israel, Grace Galu, Juan Carlos Polo, Sean Nowell, and Robert Knowles!

The HighLifeStyle Show

The HighLifeStyle Show will be over 30,000 sq ft indoor and outdoor gathering of brands, dispensaries, distributors, growers, artists, performers, and consumers to converge in the HighLifeStyle of B2B and B2C in a resort hotel conference setting with exhibitors, vendors, concerts, comedy, education, celebrities, socializing and networking.

The HighLifeStyle Show offers exhibitors and vendors a fun environment to meet qualified customers who are interested in canna-related products, services, and creative arts.

As a business conference, one of our goals is to have businesses, entrepreneurs, and brands be able to meet the distributors, retailers, and consumers in an entertaining, safe environment. Retail distributors can promote their products and retail locations in order to compete to attract new customers. Artists can find new fans. Craft growers can network to find supplies they may need to be an at-home botanist, or find outlets or job opportunities.

As a LifeStyle conference, we will be showcasing all aspects of the canna-inspired culture including health, wellness, music, art, clothing, literature, food, cultivation, supplies, medical, educational, and ancillary aspects including cannabis weddings and travel.

There will be two levels of participation involving access to indoor and outdoor activities. All attendees will be able to access all of the Exhibitors indoors and out.
