Joey Mars, King of Psychedelic Art, made a name for himself in the counterculture, and designing posters for Aerosmith and Grateful Dead. Now he’s bringing his weird to gallery walls. – thedailybeast.com
I have been at it for more than 30 years creating a unique world of characters and far-out planetary environments. My art has reached pretty much all corners of the globe at this point through distribution deals with Liquid Blue, Polygram, Not Fade Away, Net Sales, and Orion Distributors. With heavy rotation in malls, boutiques, and festivals in the ’90s and 2000s the Joey Mars brand and fan base grew in the music merch, pop-surreal, low-brow graphics world.
Going to art school in Boston, MA in the 80s I began creating band flyers and rock posters in the Boston Alt rock circles by the early 90s which led to the distribution deals and commissions with Aerosmith and Grateful Dead. I have had a few of my own stores, a gallery or two, partnered in Helltown Workshop for a moment, was president of The Worcester Artist Group, did commercial work for Budweiser and Pepsi through the Boston Phoenix, and traveled through Asia for years as a consultant and artist for Shop Therapy.
A glimpse through Mars’ collection of rock posters is like time traveling through rock history. Names like the Grateful Dead, Lemonheads, Pearl Jam, the Del Fuegos, Violent Femmes, and Death Cab For Cutie are lettered across surreal landscapes populated with fire-breathing puppets, aliens, clowns, and TV-headed beasts.
For 20 years now I have been creating paintings and drawings showcased in galleries primarily in the North East, as well as commercial illustration and design, and I still, continue my line of T-shirts and merchandise. JoeyMars.com is the place to check out my history of rock posters, T-shirts, fine art, murals, merchandise, illustrations, and commissions.
Artist Joey Mars will be at the HighLifeStyle Show, October 7, 8, and 9, 2022.
